Capt. Schiro is designated as the Acting Assistant Commandant for Reserve. In this role, she is responsible for the development and promulgation of policy to create a mission-ready and accessible Reserve workforce to meet Coast Guard and national security needs. She also serves as the appropriations sponsor for the Reserve Component and oversees a force of approximately 7,000 reservists.
Previously, Capt. Schiro served as the Reserve Chief of Staff and Senior Reserve Officer for U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area, where she completed contingency orders driving the initial planning and development of a "Summer Readiness Sprint"—a focused initiative to rapidly increase the number of boat and law enforcement-qualified reservists for emergent mission demands. Prior to assuming her duties at Atlantic Area, she was activated for 15 months as the Deputy Incident Commander for the Coast Guard Recruiting Incident Command, leading efforts to address a historic workforce shortage.
As a designated professional within the Response Operations Ashore community, Capt. Schiro served in a variety of operational assignments and crisis response efforts. Her leadership roles included Commanding Officer of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Unit at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), Reserve Chief of Staff for the 17th Coast Guard District, and Senior Reserve Officer for Sectors San Diego and Juneau, and Marine Safety Unit Chicago. She activated for numerous incident responses, serving as Sector Incident Commander for Hurricane Ian in 2022, Area Commander for Hurricane Ida in 2021, and Deputy Area Commander for the District 17 COVID-19 response in 2020. She also mobilized for the Deepwater Horizon response.
While on active duty from 1996 to 2004, Capt. Schiro served as Executive Officer of USCGC PADRE and Operations Officer of USCGC GENTIAN. She also served on the Atlantic Area Cutter Forces staff, where she was part of the team that oversaw the first deployment of 110’ WPBs in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Capt. Schiro is a 1996 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Marine and Environmental Science, with honors, and holds a Master's in Environmental Management from the University of Denver. She is married to retired U.S. Coast Guard Captain Michael Frawley, and they have two adult children, Kai and Tytan. She is also a competitive Masters swimmer and community volunteer.
